The Rodnei Mountains feel different in every season — from snow-covered slopes in winter, to blooming ridgelines in summer, and golden forests in autumn. Picking the right season depends on what you want to do: ski, hike the high ridges, or simply enjoy a quiet mountain escape.
Winter (December–March)
Winter turns Borșa into the main ski destination in Maramureș, with slopes served by a cable car and landscapes fully covered in snow. It's the busiest season, so booking accommodation ahead is essential, especially over winter holidays and weekends. High-ridge hiking stays strictly for experienced mountaineers equipped for winter conditions — trails to Pietrosul Rodnei are covered in snow and ice and carry serious risk without the right gear and experience.
Spring (April–June)
Spring is the transition season: snow gradually melts, forests turn green, and waterfall flow, including at Horses' Waterfall, is usually higher from snowmelt. Higher-altitude trails can still hold snow into June, especially on shaded slopes, so check trail conditions before any high-altitude hike. It's a good season for lower-elevation hikes and for exploring the surrounding Maramureș villages, with fewer visitors than peak season.
Summer (July–September)
Summer is the safest and most popular season for hiking Pietrosul Rodnei and the rest of the Rodnei Mountains ridge, with snow melted on most trails and long daylight hours. It's also the ideal time to combine a mountain hike with a visit to the Mocănița steam train in the Vaser Valley or the Wooden Church of Ieud. July and August weekends can fill up fast, so it's worth booking ahead if you're coming on a summer weekend.
Autumn (October–November)
Autumn brings golden colors to the beech and spruce forests around Borșa, with milder temperatures ideal for mid-altitude hikes. Later in autumn, ridge weather becomes unpredictable, with possible rain and the first snowfalls at altitude, so check the forecast carefully for any trail above the treeline.
