Borșa is Maramureș's main ski and snowboard destination, but the most important thing to know before a visit is that it actually has three distinct ski areas, each with its own lift system. It isn't one large slope — it's three separate areas in or near the town center. Which one you pick depends on your level and what kind of day on the snow you want, on skis or on a board.
Pârtia Olimpică and the Gondola
Pârtia Olimpică is served by a gondola lift (telegondolă) whose cabin route measures 2,650 m, with a base altitude of 847 m and a top altitude of 1,633 m — an altitude difference of 786 m, making it the most generous of Borșa's ski areas in both length and vertical drop. The average slope width is 60 m. It's Romania's only FIS-homologated run, certified for giant slalom and slalom, men's and women's, adult and youth categories.
From the gondola, two runs of roughly 3 km each descend — one marked red (medium difficulty), the other blue (easy). In practice, you can choose between two long descents at different difficulty levels, suited both to skiers with limited experience and to those who want more distance on a single run.
Șuior
The second ski area, Șuior, is served by a chairlift. Its route is 1,500 m, with a base altitude of 665 m and a top altitude of 971 m — an altitude difference of 306 m. It's shorter and less steep than Pârtia Olimpică, making it a more approachable option for beginner skiers or anyone who prefers shorter sessions on the slope.
The Șuior chairlift has an hourly transport capacity of around 1,200 people. On busy days that can mean waiting times, though the area is usually quieter on weekdays. If you're just starting out or want a short, easy run, Șuior is the natural pick of the three.
Cascada Cailor
The third ski area is named after Cascada Cailor (Horses' Waterfall) and is served by its own chairlift. The slopes are wide, with a minimum width of 50 m. The longest run is 1a, at 2,430 m, followed by run 1b at 2,400 m and run 1 at 1,925 m.
Worth knowing: the Cascada Cailor ski area and the hiking trail to the waterfall itself, covered in a separate guide, share the same general area and access road, but they're different activities — the hike to the waterfall doesn't run along the ski slopes.
Equipment Rental and Instructors
Rental centers at the base of the slopes carry full equipment for both skiing and snowboarding — skis, boards, boots for both, helmets and poles, available across ages and sizes. The same centers offer storage if you'd rather leave your own gear between days on the slopes.
The resort has authorized instructors for both skiing and snowboarding, available daily in season for private or group lessons, for beginners or anyone working on technique. Ski Season
Borșa's ski season generally runs from December to March, but it depends on snow cover — exact opening and closing dates vary from year to year. Before planning a visit, check the current season and slope conditions on the official site, skiborsa.eu, which also publishes skipass rates for the season. Prices and exact operating hours change from one season to the next, so the official site is the only reliable source.
Practical Tips
With three separate lift systems, the first step is picking the area that matches your level: Pârtia Olimpică for long descents at two difficulty grades, Șuior for shorter, easier runs, and Cascada Cailor for several run-length options on wide slopes. All three are in the same general area, so you can start the day at one and move to another if you want.
