The mountain cabins and refuges in the Rodnei Mountains are basic waypoints for hikers, not hotels. They offer simple shelter and a safe stopping point along the ridge route between Pasul Șetref and Pasul Rotunda, which passes Pietrosul Rodnei, Vârful Ineu and Vârful Gărgălău. Treat them as a landmark and an emergency shelter, not a source of comfort.
Cabana Croitor (Pasul Rotunda)
Cabana Croitor sits at Pasul Rotunda (Rotunda mountain pass), at an altitude of 1,320 m, and is one of the natural starting points for the ridge trails. It offers 18 beds, in rooms of 3 and 6. It's a practical stop at either the start or the end of a ridge hike.
The Refuge below Vârful Ineu
This refuge sits just below Vârful Ineu, at 2,150 m altitude, close to the peak's summit. It has a small capacity of 4-6 spots, on two-tier bunks. Being a high-altitude refuge, space is limited and comfort is minimal.
The Refuge on Pietrosul Rodnei
Located right on the summit of Pietrosul Rodnei, the massif's highest point, this refuge previously operated as an automated weather station. At 2,303 m altitude, it offers space for 6-8 people. It's the highest shelter point on the route, especially useful in changing ridge weather.
Refugiul La Cărți
Refugiul La Cărți sits in Șaua Între Izvoare, the saddle between the Repede and Negoiasa Mare peaks. It's a natural stopping point on the ridge, in the crossing zone between the two peaks, but no official figures are available for its capacity or altitude.
Cabana Puzdrele — a Landmark Today
The former Cabana Puzdrele no longer operates today as an organized, staffed cabin. It now functions mainly as a landmark and camping reference point near the Iezer weather station area. If the Pietrosul Rodnei trail guide mentions it as a stop, keep in mind it's not a staffed cabin, just a waypoint.
What to Know Before You Go
Mountain refuges in Romania are generally unstaffed or minimally staffed, with no meal service and no guaranteed heating or electricity. Bring your own sleeping bag, food, and water purification.
